Money Matters for Teens Workbook: Age 11-14
Published in Paperback by Moody Press (April, 1998)
Authors: Larry Burkett and Todd Temple
Average review score:

Presents excellent advice in a format that appeals to teens.
What a user-friendly book! Easy-to-read print, lots of cartoon-style illustrations, short chapters, easy-to-follow activities in each chapter - all that and excellent information, too! Just the thing for my 16-year-old. When I saw this book I knew it would be a hit, but I didn't know just how big a hit. My kids choose their favorite subjects to work on first each day, and this book has become number one.

But, does it work? I'll say it does. Chapter 5, "Money Management Made Easy," introduces Larry Burkett's envelope system for managing money. As soon as my son read this, he gathered his envelopes and he's been using the system faithfully ever since. If that was all he got out of this book it would be worth the price. But he is also learning how banks and checking accounts work, how loans and credit cards work, the dangers of borrowing, how to buy a car, and even how to get and keep a job.

Larry Burkett's money management principles are very scripturally sound. Although we have tried to raise our children by demonstrating and teaching sound principles, sometimes hearing from an "expert" can be just what it takes to convince them to do what they should do because it's the right thing to do, not just because Mom and Dad say so. I think that is what the bottom line will be with this great book. I am very happy with it and recommend it highly. ~sbd

Excellent, Fresh, Different
If you feel able to handle an in-depth, at times technical, exploration of early Christianity and its relationship to the LDS Church, this book is for you. On of this book's many strengths is the author's extensive knowledge of early Christianity--you will be amazed at what you didn't know!

I love this book. The message is a great one to keep us mindful of how we treat Mother Earth as well as one another. The song has a wonderful tune that children can enjoy singing. Great book with a heartfelt message!

Mountain Rebels: East Tennessee Confederates and the Civil War, 1860-1870
Published in Hardcover by Univ of Tennessee Pr (December, 1999)
Author: W. Todd Groce
Average review score:

Excellent addition to the literature on East Tennessee.
The former Executive Director of the East Tennessee Historical Society, present Executive Director of the Georgia Historical Society, has provided an excellent study on the East Tennessee Confederates. In this scholarly, balanced work, Todd Groce details why so many Knoxville and other East Tennessee business men who sided with the South wound up as post-war business leaders in Atlanta, Savannah and other Georgia cities. The area suffered because of this "brain drain" until the South's Marshall Plan (the TVA) arrived in the 1940s. It is interesting that the ET farmers largely sided with the North, while the more "cosmopolitan" businessmen, who had traveled to Baltimore and Philadelphia to buy goods, became Confederates. The complexity of the issue demanded this study. Perhaps no other part of the nation was so delayed in the "healing process" Lincoln had planned as was East Tennessee. Historian Groce's ten years of research bears fruit. Recommended!

Mrs. Lincoln and Mrs. Keckly: The Remarkable Story of the Friendship Between a First Lady and a Former Slave
Published in Hardcover by Broadway Books (08 April, 2003)
Author: Jennifer Fleischner
Average review score:

Who Was Really in Control of Her Life?
Compelling portrait of the changing status of women during the 19th century in America. Elizabeth Keckly's story of coming up from slavery and enduring emotional and physical hardships is shocking in it's matter of fact presentation. Somehow, her dignity brings to sharp focus the inhumanity of slavery and clearly shows the untenable situation the mistress' of the house also had to indure. Her ultimate success as a business woman and friend of Mary Lincoln is heartwarming and natural.

Mary Lincoln's parallel story, in contrast, begins in a rich, cultivated, "safe" home, leads to a highly public "successful" match, and yet ends in maddness. The troubling effects of untreated illness and too many deaths in her life are devastating, and have forever changed my outlook on this much maligned former first lady.

To our sensibilities, she was a victim of the social and intellectual view of a "proper" woman's place in 19th century society. Lizzy's ultimate successes were hard won, but as a former slave she, ironically, was given more freedom from society's constraints than Mary. The very things that Lizzy could do that made her "respectable" would have been considered a huge step down for Mary.

I loved every moment of this book. I didn't want it to end. Its portrait of a time in our history is beautifully realized and has given me new respect for the women of the Civil War era. If you're interested in women's history, American history, or biographies this is a must have.

A great book for using Neural Networks to compose music.
Neural Networks are becoming more and more popular these days, and it's interesting to learn one can use them to compose music. The authors of this book did this with some success.
If you are interested in Neural Networks, and in computer composed music - this is the book for you. There are various articles by different authors on this subject. All the articles appeared in the computer music journal in 1989.

Amazing mind-altering visuals..
Gazing at these exquisite, richly coloured visual designs reminded me of the psychedelic colour shows sparked in your brain by light & sound mind-machines. And like those machines, the designs in this book will likely have a very pleasant mind-altering effect.. Highly recommended.

Network+ Study Guide, Deluxe Edition

Authors: David Groth, Todd Lammle, and William Tedder
Average review score:

Text and sim all in 1 place - nice job!
Take a well known author for A+ and Net+. Add in a highly respected CCNA Author. Add to that a highly successful book for Network+ certification. Finally throw in a lab simulator and package it under through a publisher well known for producing high quality technical reference manuals.

Now you have the perfect study tool for the Net+ Certification. David Groth and Sybex have teamed up to give you an updated text for Network+ and thrown in a lab simulator to make the chance of passing the exam first time better than ever before.

I found that the OSI breakdown is not only perfect for Network+, but also the A+ class I am teaching benefits from it as well. Groth also has a great 200 pages for TCP/IP, again the explanation is written for all levels making a perfect learning and teaching tool.

Once again the text is technically up to date and accurate. The team has certainly done everything here including hands-on labs, practice questions, tips and tricks.

There are 2 cd included, one with practice exams and the other with the simulator. What should be included in either a separate lab manual to use with the simulator or the lab manual as part of the book.

Overall you have both a first rate book and simulator. If you are looking for a good set of tools for the networking, then you may just want to start here
